Capturing Movement and Light in the Natural World

How and where did your journey as an artist begin?

Jeanie Chang: Funny enough, I never drew much as a kid. I mostly loved to learn how to make things. Then I got really into pixel art and digital painting in middle school. I started my higher education in 3D modeling but changed course because Visual Development was more flexible as a career choice. I was probably also greatly influenced by how my school had much more to offer in terms of education in the illustration department VS 3D.

How do you incorporate storytelling into your animations?

Jeanie Chang: Usually, through color, lighting, and composition.

Tell us about your experience of creating visual development for the Angry Birds 2.

Jeanie Chang: It was a lot of fun! The team was full of wonderful people.

What according to you are the key factors associated with visual development?

Jeanie Chang: Storytelling and observation.

Where do you find inspiration in your day to day life?

Jeanie Chang: Nature is usually my go-to if I need a spark of inspiration. Or, photography and film still.

Which medium of creating animation are you most comfortable with?

Jeanie: Digital painting.

What is Jeanie Chang’s vision as an artist for the future?

Jeanie: I think people might be held to very high standards in many ways. We’re going to see incredible human excellence in the arts and other fields.

How do you decide the color scheme for your animations?

Jeanie: Typically, I first consider the story, mood, and time of day. Then I select the best logical options and search for art and photography with that lighting as reference.
