I have always endeavored to adapt my work as the world changes. When I began my editing career, I was focused on reality TV and documentaries. These days, I do most of my work for an online audience – YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, etc. Not only do I find myself making videos in a vertical format, but there is a much greater emphasis on grabbing a viewer's attention immediately, and keeping it through engaging graphics, music and content. I'm always evolving my work by staying up to date on the latest online video trends and practices.
I love being able to express myself creatively through video editing. Injecting a sense of humor, playfulness and fun in all of my videos is one of the best parts of my job.
Aside from boring technical questions, I like to ask my clients who their intended audience is, what message they want to send with their video, and perhaps most importantly, how they want their audience to feel after they watch the video. Should the feel inspired? Informed? Motivated? Knowing what impact you want your video to have can heavily influence the video making process.
I have over 10 years' experience as a video editor. For young creatives, my best advice would be to always keep up with new and emerging technologies. You don't need to be an expert on every new gadget or application, but at least being familiar with them will take you far.
My absolute favorite project was when I got to turn the show "Luther" into a video game. I was working for Ovation TV, a cable channel, which had acquired the show "Luther" with Idris Elba. When it came time to create content to promote the show, I wanted to create a humorous, eye-catching video that took footage from the show and combined it with video game graphics and sound. I've been a lifelong video game enthusiast so this was a lot of fun for me getting to marry two of my passions.
I've always been drawn to the creative world. From a young age I showed a huge interest in reading and writing, and that has stayed constant throughout my entire life. Through my high school and college years I developed an interest in comedy, and that eventually led me to study improv and sketch at comedy theaters around Los Angeles, including the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater, The Pack Theater, and iO West. Making friends and meeting fellow creatives keeps me inspired and reinforces my love of creativity.
Being based in the United States, and specifically being in Los Angeles, has greatly influenced my work. Los Angeles is the world capital of the entertainment industry. All the movie studios are here, all the actors, writers, directors, and producers are here. Put simply, if you want to work in the entertainment world in any capacity, Los Angeles is the place to be. I would imagine my professional journey would be very different if I lived anywhere else.
In order to deliver a compelling project, the first golden rule I follow is organization. I take all the assets I may have gotten from my client (video and audio clips, music, graphics, etc.) and organize them into a file folder structure I've created that ensures I can find whatever I need when I need it. The next golden rule is communication. I keep my client apprised of my progress, and whenever I deliver a cut, I solicit feedback so we can get closer to the finished product. And finally, the third golden rule is mutual respect. I treat my clients with the utmost respect in order to garner the best working relationship possible.
